Dominican Court Ruling Reverberates in New York

Tens of thousands of Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic could lose their citizenship, following a court ruling last month.

Lord Divers, of the Haitian Diaspora for Civic and Human Rights, said that Haitians in New York are upset with the decision.

"What is happening in DR is total prejudice, is total disrespect to human dignity and not only that, it's a violation of human right," he said.

Some in the city';s large Dominican community like Melvin Perez, who lives in Washington Heights, say they also don't agree with the ruling.

"I hate the thought of it that it’s happening in such a small country that depends so heavily on the Haitian population,” Perez said. Many Dominicans of Haitian descent are migrant workers supplying crucial labor in the sugar cane fields.

The court decision retroactively denies citizenship to anyone born after 1929 who doesn’t have at least one Dominican parent.
